Buffalo, NY – Sept. 1, 2024 – More than 800 resident physicians and fellows at the University at Buffalo (UB) will go on a four-day strike beginning Tuesday, September 3. The residents, represented by the Union of American Physicians and Dentists (UAPD), are demanding a fair contract that addresses their concerns about compensation, benefits, and working conditions.
The strike will take place at various locations throughout Western New York, see a detailed schedule below:
- Tuesday, September 3, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of Buffalo General Hospital
- Wednesday, September 4, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of Buffalo General Hospital
- Thursday, September 5, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of Buffalo General Hospital and Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center
- Friday, September 6, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. in front of Buffalo General Hospital and Oishei Children’s Hospital
After a year of negotiations, UB residents are going on strike to protest the actions of the entities that control their salaries, benefits, and working conditions—Kaleida Health, Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), and UB—for operating through a shell company, University Medical Resident Services (UMRS), and engaging in unfair labor practices, such as bargaining in bad faith and discriminating against residents for their union participation.
The residents are seeking a contract that addresses their concerns and provides them with fair compensation, adequate benefits, and a respectful working environment.
